Tutorial Co-Lead

Heidelberg University

2025

Co-led the tutorial for MVEnv4 Physics of Climate. This involved short lectures and guidance to several groups as they pursued independent research projects, culminating in poster presentations.

Guest Lecturer

Heidelberg University

2025

Stepped in on short notice to lead 2 guest lectures of MVEnv4 Physics of Climate:
(1) Earth's Energy Balance and Radiation Budget
(2) Radiation Fluxes at the Earth's Surface

Guest Lecturer

Scripps Institution of Oceanography

2022-2023

Gave 2 independent guest lectures:
(1) SIOC90 Undergraduate Seminar
(2) SIOC210 Physical Oceanography

Mentorship

During his Ph.D. career, Raymond mentored undergraduates through their studies and summer research intensive programs. Elizabeth Pogue and Eric Pham each joined Raymond's journey in the spring of 2022. Elizabeth joined as a summer research intern working with CAICE and Eric joined the IMT laboratory as an undergraduate researcher. Raymond mentored both students through their bachelor's programs, refining their skills with poster presentations, data analysis, and instrument handling.

During the summer of 2023, Radha Carollo and Kayla Ellerbe joined the CAICE summer undergraduate research program (SURP) to work with Raymond on bioaerosol emissions using a marine aerosol reference tank. They each designed their own experiments, then worked together to collect aerosol and water measurements, process aerosol size distributions, and curate posters to communicate their findings.

EDI & Outreach

During Raymond's time at the University of Miami (UM), he was a part of the undergraduate organization for LGBTQIA+ identifying persons. His primary research project was a collaborative effort with the Miller School of Medicine at UM, and involved samples taken from citizen scientists in harmful algal bloom affected areas. On campus, Raymond was often found in mentoring and information circles, and loved giving back to students earlier in their careers and prospective students,

While at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), Raymond could often be found giving tours of the Scripps Ocean-Atmosphere Research Simulator (SOARS) and even wrote a science communication piece about it. Early on, he was involved in the Out in STEM (OSTEM) group as well as the Queer at Scripps group. During his tenure living on campus, he was also a community assistant where he prided himself on providing inclusive and diverse events for fellow graduate students. During his research, he was a graduate student partner for the NSF CAICE high school mentorship CLEAR program.

Holding his queer identity close to his heart, Raymond continued with EDI outreach through his involvement with AGQ, the queer affinity group of the AGU. For the past 3 years, Raymond has served on the advising board for AGQ, managed their social media profiles, and contributed to events and session convening during the annual meeting. For 2025, Raymond has stepped into the primary leadership role for AGQ, and looks forward to successful year-round programming! Raymond firmly believes that scientific quality increases when each contributor brings their authentic selves to the project, and hopes to increase transparency and advocacy through his work.
